Parque Forestal de la Senda del Henares
Stretching along the Henares River on Torrejón's southern edge, this linear forest park is one of the most underrated green escapes in the entire Madrid metropolitan area. Shaded poplar and ash corridors, cycling paths and bird-watching points make it a genuine nature fix without leaving the city limits.
Walking and cycling the river trail
The paved Senda del Henares cycling and walking route connects Torrejón to neighbouring Alcalá de Henares over roughly 20 kilometres of flat, signposted trail — an easy half-day ride that passes wetland areas and historic irrigation channels.
In spring, the riverside meadows flood slightly, attracting grey herons, little egrets and, if you're patient and quiet, kingfishers darting between the willows at the water's edge.
Wildlife and seasonal highlights
Autumn transforms the park dramatically: the poplar canopy turns a warm amber-gold, and the fallen leaf carpet on the dirt paths makes for some of the most atmospheric walking in the region between late October and mid-November.
The park is also a reliable spot for raptors — common buzzards and black kites circle overhead in summer, while wintering black redstarts hop along the stone embankments from November through February.
