Climb to the modest but rewarding high ground at the northern edge of Torrejón and on a clear winter morning you'll see the Sierra de Guadarrama's snow-capped peaks floating above the meseta, with the glittering sprawl of Madrid's skyline visible to the west. It costs nothing and takes twenty minutes on foot from the town centre.
The view and what you'll see
The Guadarrama range — including the distinctive silhouette of La Pedriza's granite crags and, on exceptionally clear days, the summit of Peñalara at 2,428 metres — forms a dramatic backdrop that reminds you just how close Madrid's mountains really are.
To the south, the Henares valley opens up in a patchwork of irrigated fields and industrial warehouses, an honest panorama of the working Madrid commuter belt that has its own gritty, photogenic character.
Best times and practical details
Winter and early spring offer the clearest air and the best chance of seeing snow on the sierra; summer haze and calima dust from North Africa frequently reduce visibility to just a few kilometres by July and August.
The access track is unpaved but easy on foot or by mountain bike; the area is popular with local dog walkers in the early morning and at dusk, making it feel safe and lively rather than isolated.
