Uzturre Peak Viewpoint
The summit of Uzturre (1,027 m) looms directly above Tolosa and rewards a two-hour hike with one of the most sweeping panoramas in Gipuzkoa — a sea of green ridges rolling toward the Bay of Biscay with the Oria River valley laid out like a relief map below. On clear days you can pick out the Pyrenean foothills to the east.
The Hike Up
The most popular trail begins at the Aldaba neighbourhood on the northern edge of Tolosa, following a well-marked GR path through oak and beech forest before breaking onto open limestone ridgeline. The ascent gains around 850 m over roughly 5 km — strenuous but manageable for fit walkers in good footwear.
The final 200 m to the summit cross an exposed karst plateau scattered with wild orchids in spring and frost-cracked rock in winter; both are spectacular in their own way.
What You See from the Top
From the iron cross at the summit, the entire Tolosaldea valley unfolds below: the red-roofed cluster of Tolosa, the silver thread of the Oria, and the dark-green carpet of managed forest that makes this corner of the Basque Country look almost Alpine.
To the north on very clear days the glint of the Bay of Biscay is visible; to the south the limestone massif of Aralar rises like a wall. Sunset from Uzturre in October, when the beech forest below turns amber, is genuinely breathtaking.
