Todi Saturday Market

Every Saturday morning Piazza del Popolo and the streets radiating from it fill with one of Umbria's most authentic weekly markets — a lively mix of local farmers, cheese sellers, truffle merchants and textile stalls that has been running for centuries. This is where Todi actually shops.

What to Buy

The food stalls are the main draw: look for aged Pecorino di Norcia, honey from local hives, jars of black truffle paste (the Martani Hills nearby are prime truffle territory), lentils from Castelluccio and bottles of Sagrantino wine from the Montefalco DOC zone just 20 km north.

Non-food finds include hand-embroidered linen, wrought-iron kitchen tools and the occasional antique ceramics dealer tucked between the vegetable carts. Arrive before 10 a.m. for the best selection and the most animated atmosphere before the tourist coaches arrive.

Etiquette and Timing

Greet vendors with a buongiorno and ask before touching produce — the usual Italian market courtesy. Most stalls accept cash only, so stop at the Banca di Credito Cooperativo ATM on Via Roma beforehand.

The market winds down by 13:00, after which the piazza empties quickly. Pair your visit with a coffee at Bar Pianegiani on the square, a Todi institution that has been serving the town since the 1960s.
