Tempio di Santa Maria della Consolazione
Standing alone in the valley below Todi's walls, this domed Renaissance church is considered one of the most architecturally refined buildings in Italy — a contemporary of St Peter's Basilica in Rome and likely influenced by Bramante. Yet almost no one is here, which makes the experience all the more extraordinary.
The Architecture
Begun in 1508 and taking nearly a century to complete, the church is built on a Greek-cross plan with four apses and a soaring central drum supporting a pale stone dome. Every façade is identical — a deliberate statement of mathematical harmony that architects call 'ideal Renaissance form'.
Walk slowly around the exterior before entering; the building reads differently from each angle, and the surrounding meadow of long grass and wild flowers in spring makes it look like a painting come to life. Inside, the space is austere and luminous, the geometry doing all the work.
Visiting Practically
The temple sits a 15-minute walk downhill from Porta Orvietana — the same gate where the escalator drops you from the car park. It is an easy, scenic walk through olive groves, though the return uphill will test your legs. Alternatively, drive down and park in the small free car park beside the church.
Opening hours are limited and change seasonally, so check locally before making it the centrepiece of your morning. The interior is small and visits are brief, but the exterior alone justifies the detour.
