Ristorante Umbria
Tucked just off Piazza del Popolo on Via San Bonaventura, Ristorante Umbria has been feeding Todi's residents and discerning visitors since 1927 — a longevity that speaks to the kitchen's commitment to honest Umbrian cooking rather than tourist-friendly shortcuts. The terrace view over the valley is as good as the pasta.
What to Order
Start with the bruschetta al tartufo nero — thick-cut local bread grilled over wood and spread with a generous scrape of fresh black truffle. Follow it with tagliolini al tartufo, hand-cut egg pasta in a butter and truffle sauce that is deceptively simple and completely addictive.
For a secondi, the piccione arrosto (roasted wood pigeon) is a regional classic that appears on the menu when the season allows. The wine list leans heavily on Umbrian producers; ask the owner for a glass of Lungarotti Rubesco or a local Grechetto white.
Atmosphere and Booking
The dining room is unfussy — white tablecloths, terracotta floors, framed black-and-white photos of old Todi — and the service is warm without being performative. The covered terrace at the back, overlooking the green valley, is where you want to sit on fine days.
Reservations are strongly recommended for lunch on Saturdays and for any dinner in July and August. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and typically takes a break for a few weeks in January.
