Riesling and Pinot Gris at the Thann Vignoble
Thann's vineyards cling to steep slopes of volcanic rhyolite soil that give its Rieslings and Pinot Gris a smoky, mineral intensity found almost nowhere else in Alsace. The town's own Grand Cru, Rangen de Thann, is the southernmost and arguably the most dramatic Grand Cru in the entire Alsace appellation — a near-vertical slope that demands hand-harvesting.
Rangen de Thann Grand Cru
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, one of Alsace's most celebrated estates, produces benchmark Rangen Riesling and Pinot Gris that regularly appear on the world's best restaurant lists. Their tasting room in nearby Turckheim is worth the 30-minute drive, but you can also taste at local Thann producers.
The slope's dark volcanic rock absorbs heat so efficiently that grapes ripen even in cool years, producing wines of extraordinary concentration and longevity.
Where to Taste Locally
Domaine Bott-Geyl and several smaller vignerons in Thann open their caves for tastings, especially during the summer and harvest season — look for 'dégustation' signs on the Route des Vins just outside town.
Pair a glass of Rangen Riesling with a slice of Munster cheese or a choucroute garnie at a local winstub for a textbook Alsatian afternoon.
