Collégiale Saint-Thiébaut
Standing at the heart of Thann, the Collégiale Saint-Thiébaut is widely considered the finest Gothic church in Alsace, its 78-metre openwork spire piercing the Vosges skyline like lacework carved in stone. Centuries of master craftsmen left behind a treasure chest of 15th-century stained glass, ornate choir stalls and a celebrated tympanum that stops every visitor cold.
A Spire Like No More
The tower's octagonal spire is the showpiece: its stone tracery is so delicate it looks almost organic, earning comparisons to the great cathedrals of Strasbourg and Freiburg. Locals call it 'la merveille de l'Alsace' and the nickname is entirely deserved.
Construction stretched from the 13th to the 15th century, meaning you can read the full arc of Gothic ambition in a single building — from solid Romanesque foundations to the soaring Flamboyant pinnacle above.
Inside the Nave
The 15th-century choir stalls are carved with a wit that would surprise you: misericords hide tiny scenes of everyday medieval life, from bakers to gossiping neighbours. Give your eyes time to adjust to the dimness and the detail reveals itself slowly.
The great rose window and the lateral nave windows filter afternoon light into pools of amber and cobalt that shift across the stone floor — arrive between 3 pm and 5 pm in summer for the best effect.
