Musée des Amis de Thann
Housed in the strikingly beautiful Corn Hall (Halle aux Blés) built in 1519, the Musée des Amis de Thann is one of those small-town museums that quietly punches above its weight, telling the story of Thann's medieval prosperity, its wine trade and the devastating battles of World War One that raged on the slopes just above the town.
The Building Itself
The half-timbered Halle aux Blés is a masterpiece of late-Gothic civic architecture — its open arcaded ground floor and carved wooden gallery are worth the visit before you even look at a single exhibit. It sits on the main square next to the Collégiale, yet most visitors walk straight past it.
The building served as a grain market for centuries and later as a military storehouse; the fact that it survived two world wars intact makes it something of a miracle.
The Collection
Inside you'll find medieval sculpture salvaged from the Collégiale, Alsatian faïence, guild artefacts and a room dedicated to the Thann wine trade that puts the Rangen Grand Cru in historical context. The WWI section is particularly moving — Thann was one of the few Alsatian towns held by French forces throughout the war, and the exhibits document that strange, isolated pocket of resistance with photographs and personal objects.
Labels are in French and German but the objects speak clearly enough; allow a leisurely 90 minutes.
