Marché de Noël de Thann
While Colmar and Strasbourg draw the crowds, Thann's Christmas market unfolds in the shadow of the Collégiale Saint-Thiébaut with a warmth and authenticity that larger markets have long since traded away. Wooden chalets selling bredele (Alsatian Christmas biscuits), vin chaud and handmade ornaments fill the square from late November through Christmas Eve.
The Setting
The Collégiale's illuminated Gothic spire towers over the market stalls, turning the whole square into a natural stage set. Arrive after dark when the stone tracery glows amber and the smell of mulled wine and cinnamon drifts across the cobblestones.
Because the market is small and local, you actually talk to the producers — the woman selling hand-painted glass baubles likely made them in her kitchen, and the cheesemaker two stalls over drove down from the Vosges that morning.
What to Buy and Eat
Look for bredele in their dozens of regional varieties — anise-scented springerle, buttery spritz, chocolate-dipped mannele — as well as pain d'épices, foie gras and local Riesling sold by the bottle.
Thann's market also features local craftspeople selling ceramics, linen and woodwork alongside the food stalls, giving it a genuinely artisan feel rather than a purely commercial one.
