Piazza del Duomo at Dusk
The sloping, travertine-paved Piazza del Duomo is arguably the most beautiful cathedral square in Umbria, and at dusk — when the last light catches the 12th-century Romanesque facade and the golden mosaic above the portal blazes — it becomes genuinely unforgettable. Bring a bottle of local wine, find a step and simply watch the light change.
The cathedral and its treasures
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta was consecrated in 1198 and its interior contains a celebrated cycle of apse frescoes painted by Filippo Lippi between 1467 and 1469 — his last work, as he died in Spoleto before completing it and is buried here in a tomb designed by his son Filippino.
The facade's eight rose windows and the glittering Byzantine-influenced mosaic of Christ in Majesty are best appreciated from the far end of the piazza, where the full composition comes into view across the wide open space.
The piazza as a gathering place
The square is on a gentle slope, with broad steps leading down from the cathedral portico, and locals use it as a natural amphitheatre — during the Festival dei Due Mondi in late June and early July, open-air performances are staged here under the stars.
A handful of café tables spill out from the surrounding buildings; order a Campari spritz and watch the swallows wheel over the bell tower as the sky turns apricot. There is no better introduction to the Spoleto evening.
