What to look for at the stalls
The market is at its most animated Tuesday through Saturday between 08:00 and 13:00. Vendors from the surrounding hill villages bring fresh ricotta wrapped in fern leaves, hand-rolled pici pasta and jars of truffle paste that cost a fraction of what you would pay in a tourist shop.
In autumn, look for the stalls selling fresh black truffles from the Valnerina — the scorzone variety (summer truffle) appears from May, while the prized Tuber melanosporum is available November through March.
The square itself as a sight
At the centre of the piazza stands the Fonte di Piazza, a 19th-century fountain built into Roman masonry, and the surrounding medieval buildings lean in at characterful angles that make every photograph look like a film set.
The nearby Via del Mercato is lined with small alimentari and wine bars where you can taste a glass of Sagrantino di Montefalco alongside a slice of local salumi — the perfect way to extend a market visit into a proper morning.
