Sentier des Alpages de Servoz
The waymarked Sentier des Alpages loops through the high summer pastures above Servoz, connecting a series of working mountain farms where you can buy fresh Tomme cheese directly from the farmer and watch the herds of Abondance cattle that produce the milk for Savoie's great cheeses. It is the Alps as they have functioned for a thousand years.
The Route
Starting from the upper village, the trail climbs through mixed forest before breaking into open alpage (high pasture) at around 1,600 metres, with views back down the Arve valley and across to the Aiguilles Rouges. The full loop is approximately 10 km with 550 metres of ascent and takes 3.5 to 4 hours at a comfortable pace.
The path is well-signed with the yellow diamond markers of the Haute-Savoie departmental trail network and is suitable for fit walkers with decent footwear. There are no technical sections, but the upper section can be slippery after rain.
Farm Encounters and Cheese
In July and August the chalets d'alpage are occupied by farmers who have driven their herds up from the valley for the summer transhumance. Knocking on the door of an occupied chalet and asking to buy cheese is entirely normal practice — you may pay €5–8 for a wedge of fresh Tomme de Savoie cut straight from the wheel.
The farmers are generally happy to show visitors the traditional copper cheese-making vats if they are not mid-production. This is an authentic agricultural encounter, not a tourist attraction — be respectful of working hours and always close gates behind you.
