Le Bivouac Restaurant, Servoz
Tucked into the heart of Servoz village, Le Bivouac is the kind of unpretentious mountain restaurant where the tartiflette arrives bubbling in a cast-iron pan and the terrace looks directly up at the forested flanks of the Aiguilles Rouges. It is exactly the meal you came to the Alps to eat.
What to Order
The tartiflette — Reblochon cheese melted over potatoes, lardons and onions — is the non-negotiable order, ideally paired with a carafe of local Savoie white wine such as Apremont or Chignin. The croûte au fromage (toasted bread loaded with melted cheese and charcuterie) is a worthy alternative for lighter appetites.
In summer the menu expands to include salads built around local Beaufort cheese and cured meats from the Arve valley. Desserts lean heavily on local dairy: crème caramel made with full-fat mountain milk and a generous wedge of tarte aux myrtilles (bilberry tart) using wild berries from the surrounding forest.
Atmosphere and Practicalities
The dining room is low-ceilinged and wood-panelled in the classic Savoyard style, with cowbells and vintage ski posters on the walls — not a theme-park recreation but the genuine article in a building that has fed walkers and farmers for decades. In high summer the terrace fills by noon, so arrive early or book ahead.
Servoz is a quiet village by Chamonix standards, and Le Bivouac reflects that: service is unhurried and genuinely friendly, prices are noticeably gentler than in Chamonix itself, and the atmosphere feels local rather than touristic.
