Col de la Forclaz de Servoz
Tucked above the village on a quiet forest road, the Col de la Forclaz de Servoz delivers a sweeping panorama of the Chamonix valley, the Aiguilles Rouges and the full snowy arc of Mont Blanc without the tour-bus crush you find at better-known belvederes. Locals come here at dusk with a bottle of wine — that tells you everything.
Reaching the Pass
A narrow tarmac road climbs from Servoz village through spruce and larch forest, gaining around 400 metres in about 6 km, and is drivable in summer or reachable on foot via the GR TMB trail variant in roughly 90 minutes. The final hairpins open suddenly onto a grassy saddle where the entire Chamonix valley unfolds below you like a relief map.
Mountain bikers also use this col as a waypoint on longer loops connecting to Les Houches, so expect to share the road with cyclists on weekend mornings. The surface is good enough for standard cars but take it slowly on blind corners.
What You See from the Top
On a clear day the view stretches from the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) across the Géant glacier to the Grandes Jorasses, with the white dome of Mont Blanc anchoring the skyline at 4,808 m. In the foreground, the patchwork of Servoz's hay meadows and traditional chalets creates that classic postcard Alpine contrast.
Sunrise here is extraordinary — the first light turns the summit snowfields a deep rose-gold while the valley below is still in blue shadow. A thermos of coffee and a blanket are the only equipment you need.
