Semur-en-Auxois Thursday Morning Market
Every Thursday morning the Place Notre-Dame and surrounding streets fill with the honest commerce of the Auxois plateau: rounds of Époisses, bunches of Dijon mustard greens, live rabbits, jars of marc de Bourgogne jelly and farmers who have driven the same route since their grandparents did. This is not a tourist market — it is the weekly heartbeat of the town.
What to buy and taste
Époisses cheese, produced in the village of the same name just 15 km away, appears here at its freshest — look for the small-producer stalls rather than the supermarket-branded versions; the rind should be sticky orange and the paste almost liquid at room temperature.
Local charcutiers sell jambon persillé (the parsley-studded Burgundian terrine), andouillette de Chablis and dried saucisson that travel well in a cool bag for a picnic on the ramparts later.
In autumn the market expands with walnut oil from the Morvan, wild mushrooms foraged from local forests, and squash in colours that seem to have been chosen by a painter.
Navigating the market like a local
Arrive by 9 am for the widest choice; by 11:30 am the best cheese and charcuterie stalls begin to pack up.
The market spills down the Rue Buffon and around the church apse — the side streets often hide the most interesting small-holders selling honey, herbal tisanes and homegrown vegetables.
The café-bar on the square opens early on market days; grab a grand crème and watch the town do its weekly shop from a pavement table — it is one of the most pleasurably ordinary French experiences you can have.
