Collégiale Notre-Dame de Semur-en-Auxois

Four massive round towers of rosy granite rise above the Armançon river gorge, making the Collégiale Notre-Dame one of the most dramatic Gothic silhouettes in all of Burgundy. Step inside and the nave narrows to an almost audacious slenderness, drawing every eye upward to ribbed vaults that seem to defy gravity.

Architecture worth craning your neck for

The church dates from the 13th and 14th centuries and its nave is famously one of the narrowest in France relative to its height — a deliberate theatrical trick that floods the interior with vertical drama.

Look for the north transept portal carved with a tympanum depicting the legend of Doubting Thomas, a surprisingly intimate and detailed piece of medieval storytelling in stone.

The stained-glass windows in the apse include a 15th-century panel donated by the town's butchers' guild, showing a cheerfully gory scene of oxen — a rare piece of medieval guild pride still glowing in colour.

Practical visit tips

The church is freely accessible most of the day; arrive in the morning when low sunlight cuts through the coloured glass and paints the pale stone floor in jewel tones.

A small explanatory leaflet in English is usually available at the entrance, pointing out the key sculptural and glazing highlights so you don't miss the guild windows.

Climb the exterior rampart path that runs directly alongside the apse for a close-up view of the flying buttresses and the gorge below — it takes only ten minutes and rewards with superb framing.
