Musée Municipal de Semur-en-Auxois
Most visitors walk straight past the door of this small but genuinely surprising municipal museum, housed in a former convent on Rue Jean-Jacques Collenot. Inside, a palaeontology collection featuring Jurassic fossils excavated from the local limestone sits alongside 17th–19th-century paintings, medieval sculpture fragments and objects telling the story of the town's wool and tanning industries.
Highlights you won't expect
The fossil collection is the sleeper star of the museum: the Auxois plateau sits on Jurassic marine sediment and the specimens — ammonites, belemnites and ichthyosaur bones — were found within a few kilometres of the town walls.
A room of medieval stone sculpture salvaged from demolished chapels and doorways gives you an unmediated encounter with 13th and 14th-century craftsmanship at arm's length, without the crowds or rope barriers of a major institution.
The fine-art collection includes several competent 17th-century Flemish and French paintings that would attract more attention in a larger city museum — here you can stand in front of them entirely alone.
Visiting practicalities
The museum is small enough to do justice to in 90 minutes, making it an ideal wet-weather refuge or a cool midday retreat in summer.
Temporary exhibitions are mounted regularly and often focus on local archaeology or regional craft traditions — check the town's official website before your visit for current shows.
The museum shop stocks well-produced local history booklets and reproductions of the fossil specimens — the ammonite prints make excellent lightweight souvenirs.
