Limoncello Making at Agriturismo Le Terrazze, Scala

The sfusato amalfitano lemon — longer, more fragrant and less acidic than any supermarket variety — is the defining flavour of this coast, and there is no better way to understand it than spending a morning at one of Scala's working lemon farms learning to make limoncello from scratch. Agriturismo Le Terrazze runs hands-on sessions in its terraced groves with views straight down to the sea.

The Workshop

Sessions begin with a walk through the terraced groves, where the farm's owner explains the sfusato cultivar — its unusually thick, oil-rich peel is what makes Amalfi limoncello distinct from the Sorrento version. You zest the lemons by hand, steep the peel in pure grain alcohol, then blend with a sugar syrup made to the family's own ratio, which has apparently not changed since the 1970s.

The finished bottle is yours to take home, properly labelled. The whole process takes about two hours and ends with a tasting of the farm's own production alongside a plate of lemon cake and local cheeses on the terrace.

Booking and Context

Sessions are available Tuesday and Friday mornings from April through October, and must be booked at least 48 hours in advance by email or phone. Groups are kept small — a maximum of eight people — which means the session feels genuinely personal rather than a tourist-production line.

The agriturismo also offers simple overnight rooms and a farm dinner on Friday evenings; combining a limoncello workshop with a night on the terrace and dinner under the lemon pergola is, frankly, one of the best 24 hours you can spend on the Amalfi Coast.
