Saverne Saturday Morning Market
Every Saturday the Place du Général-de-Gaulle and the streets fanning out from it fill with producers from the Kochersberg plain and the Northern Vosges, turning Saverne's centre into a fragrant open-air larder. Arrive before 9 am to beat the locals to the best Munster and mirabelle jam.
What to Look For
The stalls lean heavily on hyper-local produce: white asparagus in May, golden mirabelle plums in August, sauerkraut crocks in autumn and wedges of Munster cheese year-round. A handful of vendors sell Kugelhopf, the fluted Alsatian brioche, still warm from the oven.
Look for the dedicated charcuterie stalls offering Presskopf (Alsatian brawn), smoked Montbéliard sausages and slabs of lard aux herbes. These are the ingredients that end up on every winstub table in the region — buying direct from the producer is a different experience entirely.
Beyond the Food
Flower sellers cluster near the fountain, and a small brocante section at the edge of the market turns up old Alsatian pottery, enamel advertising signs and the occasional embroidered tablecloth. It is unhurried browsing at its best.
The market wraps up around noon, after which the surrounding café terraces fill with shoppers nursing a Pinot Gris or a Picon bière. Pull up a chair at any of the brasseries on the square and watch the stalls come down — it is quintessential small-town Alsace.
