Haut-Barr Castle Viewpoint
Perched on three dramatic sandstone rocks 460 metres above sea level, the ruined Château du Haut-Barr has earned its nickname 'Eye of Alsace' — on a clear day the view sweeps from the Black Forest to the Vosges and, in exceptional conditions, all the way to Strasbourg Cathedral's spire 30 km away. The 6 km drive or hike from Saverne is rewarded the moment you step onto the rock terraces.
The Castle Itself
Dating from the 12th century and later expanded by Bishop Manderscheid, Haut-Barr is a genuine medieval ruin rather than a restoration. Scramble up the iron staircase bolted directly into the sandstone to reach the highest platform — the exposure is exhilarating and the panorama is simply the finest in northern Alsace.
A footbridge connecting two of the three rock outcrops adds a mild adventure element. The castle restaurant and terrace bar (open spring–autumn) means you can linger over a Flammekueche and a local beer while the plain glows below you.
Getting There and Timing
From Saverne town centre, the GR53 hiking trail climbs through beech and pine forest to the castle in about 90 minutes at an easy pace. Drivers can park at the castle car park just below the rocks. The road is narrow but well-signed from the D171 out of Saverne.
Sunset visits are spectacular — the Alsatian plain turns amber and the Rhine glints silver on the horizon. Arrive an hour before dusk, explore the ruins, then stay for the light show. Bring a layer; the ridge catches every breeze.
