Caves Louis de Grenelle — Champagne-Method Cellars
Beneath the streets of Saumur, a 15-kilometre network of chalk tunnels carved out of the tuffeau hillside in the 19th century now cradles millions of bottles of Saumur Brut — the Loire's answer to Champagne, made by the same méthode traditionnelle but at a fraction of the price. Louis de Grenelle opens its labyrinthine cellars for guided tours that are part wine education, part underground adventu
The Tour
The 45-minute guided visit descends into galleries where the temperature holds at a constant 12°C year-round — the ideal environment for the second fermentation that gives Saumur Brut its fine persistent bubbles. Your guide explains riddling, disgorgement and dosage with the help of real bottles at each stage, making even wine novices feel genuinely informed by the end.
The highlight is the final tasting room, a cathedral-like chalk chamber where you sample three cuvées side by side: the classic Brut, a rosé made from Cabernet Franc, and a vintage reserve. The rosé in particular is a revelation — salmon-pink, strawberry-fresh and under €12 a bottle in the cave shop.
Buying and Visiting
The on-site shop sells the full range at cellar-door prices significantly below supermarket cost. The Cuvée Spéciale Brut (around €9.50) is the one to load into your luggage — it outperforms bottles twice its price from better-known houses.
Tours run in English and French; the caves are a 10-minute walk from the château and make a perfect midday activity when the summer heat is at its peak — inside it is always cool.
