Valle della Luna, Capo Testa
Hidden within the boulder fields of Capo Testa, the Valle della Luna is a sheltered valley of smooth granite formations, wild herbs and a tiny beach that has attracted free-spirited travellers since the 1970s. It is one of those places that feels genuinely off the tourist map even though it is barely ten minutes from town.
Finding the Valley
From the Capo Testa car park, follow the path westward through the granite labyrinth for about 15 minutes until the boulders open into a sheltered depression facing a small west-facing cove. There are no signs — that is part of the point. Ask a local or follow the sound of the sea.
The valley takes its name from the moon-like quality of the granite landscape: smooth, pale, otherworldly domes of rock that seem to glow at dusk. In the 1970s it became a gathering place for European hippies and a small semi-permanent community still lives here seasonally in the caves and among the rocks.
What Makes It Special
The beach at the bottom of the valley is tiny and pebbly, but the water is extraordinary — a deep, sheltered inlet ringed by granite that turns the sea an intense jade green. Because it faces west, it catches the last light of the day long after the main Capo Testa beaches are in shadow.
The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in the area: unhurried, slightly mystical, full of the smell of rosemary and sea salt. Bring water, a picnic and a book, and plan to stay longer than you intended.
