Torre di Longosardo
Rising from the rocky headland at the western tip of Santa Teresa, this 16th-century Aragonese watchtower is the town's most iconic silhouette and commands one of the most dramatic panoramas on the entire island. Climb it at golden hour and you will not want to leave.
History on the Headland
Built by the Spanish Crown around 1507 to warn against Saracen raids, the Torre di Longosardo is one of the best-preserved coastal towers in Sardinia. Its honey-coloured stone glows amber at sunset, making it irresistible to photographers.
The tower stands about 18 metres tall and you can climb to the top via an internal staircase. From the battlements, the Strait of Bonifacio stretches out in every direction — Corsica to the north, the Maddalena Archipelago to the east, and the wild Gallura coastline to the west.
Making the Most of the Visit
The walk out to the tower from the town centre follows a short scenic path along the cliff edge, passing wild rosemary and mastic scrub. It takes less than ten minutes and the path is well-signed from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
Visit in the late afternoon when the crowds thin and the light turns golden. On summer evenings local musicians occasionally play near the base of the tower, giving the whole scene a wonderfully unhurried atmosphere.
