Mercato dei Fiori di Sanremo
Sanremo sits at the heart of the Riviera dei Fiori — the Riviera of Flowers — and its wholesale flower market is one of the largest in Europe, shifting millions of stems every single night. A pre-dawn visit to the Mercato Floricolo on Via Umberto I is a genuinely extraordinary, fragrant spectacle.
The Night Shift of the Flower World
The auction floor opens at around 6 am and the trading is brisk, computerised and surprisingly loud — buyers from across Europe bid via touchscreens while forklifts shuttle pallets of roses, carnations and mimosa through a warehouse the size of an aircraft hangar.
The air is an almost overwhelming cocktail of rose, freesia and eucalyptus. Even in January, when the rest of Liguria looks grey, the market is a riot of colour — Sanremo's microclimate allows year-round cultivation in the terraced greenhouses that step up the hillsides behind the city.
What Visitors Can See and Buy
Casual visitors are welcome on the public gallery overlooking the auction floor; arrive before 7 am on a weekday for the best action. Some stalls sell directly to the public at the end of the session, and you can carry home a bouquet of long-stemmed roses for a fraction of what you would pay at home.
The market also hosts an annual Flower Festival in late January or February — dates shift yearly — when the promenade is carpeted in floral mosaics and the florists compete in elaborate display competitions.
