Capo Verde Belvedere, Ospedaletti Road
Drive or cycle four kilometres west of Sanremo along the old coastal road toward Ospedaletti and you will reach the Capo Verde headland, a rocky promontory with a belvedere that delivers one of the most sweeping views on the entire Italian Riviera — and almost nobody else there to share it.
The View That Earns the Drive
From the belvedere you see Sanremo's casino dome and the Ligurian coastline curving west toward Bordighera and, on clear winter mornings, the snow-capped Maritime Alps rising behind the French border. The light is best in the hour before sunset when the limestone cliffs turn amber and the sea goes deep indigo.
The old coastal road itself — the Via Aurelia — is a pleasure to walk or cycle, lined with cactus, agave and the occasional abandoned Belle Époque villa slowly being reclaimed by bougainvillea. The new motorway took all the traffic decades ago, leaving this stretch blissfully quiet.
Combining with a Swim or a Ride
The Pista Ciclabile — a dedicated cycling and walking path — runs along the seafront from Sanremo all the way through Ospedaletti to Bordighera, roughly 24 kilometres in total. The Capo Verde headland sits neatly at the halfway point, making it a natural rest stop with a view.
Below the belvedere, a narrow path drops to flat rocks and small coves where locals swim in summer. The water is clear enough to snorkel without a mask, and the absence of a sandy beach means the crowds thin out dramatically compared to the main city beaches.
