Foz de Lumbier & Foz de Arbayún

Foz de Lumbier: Easy Wonder
The Foz de Lumbier is accessible to everyone — a flat 3.5 km round-trip walk along a disused railway line through a canyon so narrow the sky is reduced to a bright ribbon above your head. Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures and even the occasional bearded vulture (quebrantahuesos) circle the limestone walls, close enough to see the feather detail on their wingtips.
Two dramatic tunnels on the old rail route add a theatrical darkness to the walk; emerge from the second tunnel and the gorge opens suddenly into a wide, sunlit valley — one of those simple moments of landscape drama that stay with you long after the holiday ends.
Foz de Arbayún: Wilder and Deeper
Arbayún is more remote and more spectacular — a 6 km gorge carved by the Río Salazar with vertical walls rising to 300 metres that are home to over 200 pairs of griffon vultures, making it a Reserva Natural and one of the best raptor-watching sites in Spain. The main viewpoint (mirador) is reached by road from the village of Navascués and requires no hiking.
Visit on a warm morning when the thermals build and you will witness dozens of vultures launching themselves from the cliff ledges in a slow, majestic spiral — a spectacle of controlled mass that is genuinely difficult to describe to someone who hasn't seen it. Bring binoculars.
