Paseo de Colón and Alderdi Eder Gardens
Sandwiched between La Concha beach and the grand Casino building, the Alderdi Eder gardens are the green lungs of the seafront — manicured, shaded by giant plane trees and almost entirely overlooked by visitors rushing between the beach and the Old Town. The adjacent Paseo de Colón offers the best eye-level view of the bay without the selfie-stick crowds of the promenade.
The Gardens and the Casino
The gardens were laid out in the late 19th century to complement the Casino building (now the Town Hall, since gambling was banned in 1924). The ornate white facade of the Ayuntamiento reflected in the garden fountains is one of the most photographed — and yet least crowded — compositions in the city.
Enormous London plane trees form a canopy that keeps the gardens cool even in August heat. Locals use them for lunchtime shade, dog walks and the occasional chess game on the stone tables near the bandstand.
The Paseo de Colón Viewpoint
Walk to the western end of the gardens and the Paseo de Colón opens onto a low stone terrace directly above the beach. From here you see La Concha at eye level rather than from above — the scale of the bay, the Isla de Santa Clara and Monte Igueldo all align in a single horizontal composition that feels more intimate than the Monte Igueldo panorama.
Early morning is magical: the light is soft, the beach is empty and the only sounds are waves and the distant clatter of the fish market opening up. This is where San Sebastián's photographers come before the tourists wake up.
