La Concha Beach
Crescent-shaped La Concha is consistently ranked among Europe's finest city beaches, wrapping around a glittering bay with the wooded isla de Santa Clara anchored at its centre. The Belle Époque promenade that frames it — all wrought-iron balustrades and ornate lampposts — makes even a morning stroll feel cinematic.
The Bay in Full Glory
The beach stretches nearly 1.4 km of fine, pale sand that stays remarkably clean thanks to the city's fierce civic pride. At low tide the sand widens dramatically, revealing tidal pools worth exploring near the rocky western headland.
The Real Club de Tenis and the iconic Miramar Palace — once Queen María Cristina's summer residence — crown the hill above the western end, giving the whole scene an aristocratic backdrop that no other city beach in Spain can match.
Swimming, Rowing and Sunset Rituals
Local rowing clubs (traineras) practise in the bay on weekend mornings, their long wooden boats slicing through the calm water while swimmers share the lanes — a very Basque slice of daily life.
Come evening, the promenade fills with pintxos-fuelled locals doing the paseo. Grab a bench near the ornate Balneario La Perla spa and watch the sun drop behind Monte Igueldo for a colour show that photographers chase all summer long.
