Mercado de la Bretxa
Tucked into the northern edge of the Old Town, Mercado de la Bretxa is where San Sebastián's chefs and home cooks shop for the ingredients that make Basque cuisine the most celebrated in Spain. The 19th-century iron-and-glass structure has been beautifully restored, and the underground fish and meat halls are a spectacle of abundance.
What to Buy and Where
The ground-floor fresh produce stalls overflow with Guernica peppers, Tolosa black beans, Idiazabal cheese wheels and wild mushrooms from the Basque hills. Vendors are forthcoming with samples and genuinely proud of provenance — ask where something is from and prepare for a detailed answer.
The underground fish hall is the real showstopper: whole turbots the size of coffee tables, live spider crabs, pristine anchovies from the Bay of Biscay and the famous kokotxas (cod cheeks) that appear on every serious restaurant menu in the city.
Eating and Drinking at the Market
Several pintxos bars operate inside and around the market, opening from 07:00 to serve fishermen, market workers and early-rising tourists. A glass of txakoli with a tortilla pintxo at 09:00 here is one of the great uncelebrated pleasures of the city.
The surrounding streets — particularly Calle Aldamar — host specialist food shops selling conservas (tinned seafood of extraordinary quality), local wines from Rioja Alavesa and artisan cider from nearby Astigarraga.
