Marché de la Kerlédé – Place du Marché
Every Saturday morning, the covered and open-air market at Kerlédé fills with the kind of produce that reminds you exactly where you are: briny Guérande oysters, salted butter from Noirmoutier, bundles of marsh samphire, and warm kouign-amann straight from a Breton baker's van. It is the most authentic food-shopping experience in Saint-Nazaire.
What to look for and buy
The Loire-Atlantique coastline makes this market exceptional for seafood: look for vivid orange palourdes clams, spider crabs in season (October–April), and thick fillets of lieu jaune (pollack) caught off the Pays de la Loire coast. Fishmongers arrive early and sell out fast.
Inland producers bring raw-milk Nantes-style fromage blanc, local honey, and — in autumn — ceps and girolles foraged from the forests of the Brière regional park just 20 km north. The Guérande salt merchants with their grey fleur de sel are unmissable.
How to make a morning of it
Arrive by 9 h to beat the crowds and catch the full selection; most stalls begin packing up around 13 h. Grab a café crème at the boulangerie on the corner of the square and watch the neighbourhood wake up — this is genuinely local Saint-Nazaire, not a tourist market.
The Kerlédé district itself is a pleasant, unpretentious residential quarter built in the post-war reconstruction era. A short walk away, the Parc Paysager de Kerlédé offers a green escape for a post-market stroll.
