Écomusée de Saint-Nazaire – Escal'Atlantic
Buried inside a colossal WWII submarine bunker, Escal'Atlantic lets you step aboard a faithful recreation of a 1930s transatlantic liner — without ever leaving dry land. It is one of the most theatrical museum experiences in western France, and utterly unlike anything else on the Atlantic coast.
A bunker turned into a golden age of travel
The German U-boat bunker that shelters this museum is itself a monument — its concrete walls are 8 metres thick and survived Allied bombing intact. Walking through the gates feels like entering a fortress, which makes the glamorous Art Deco interiors inside all the more startling.
The scenography recreates the grand salons, first-class cabins, engine rooms and promenade decks of the legendary liners — Normandie, Île-de-France, France — that were built right here in Saint-Nazaire's shipyards. Period sound design and archival film footage make the illusion remarkably convincing.
Practical tips for your visit
Allow at least two hours; the circuit covers several decks and includes an outdoor terrace on top of the bunker with sweeping views over the Loire estuary and the working shipyard where giant cruise ships are still assembled today.
Guided tours in French run daily; English audio guides are available. The museum shop sells excellent reproductions of vintage transatlantic posters that make distinctive souvenirs.
