Le Sous-Marin Espadon – Forme Joubert
Moored in the same enormous submarine pen as Escal'Atlantic, the Espadon is a real French Navy submarine that you can actually clamber through from bow to stern — squeezing past torpedo tubes, ducking under periscopes and sitting in the cramped bunk where a sailor once slept on three-month Arctic missions. It is one of the most visceral, hands-on museum experiences in France.
What makes it special
The Espadon (meaning 'swordfish') served in the French Navy from 1960 to 1986 and was the first French submarine to sail under the Arctic ice pack. The vessel is preserved in extraordinary detail: every gauge, valve and logbook is exactly where it was left, and the confined spaces give you an immediate, physical sense of life beneath the waves.
Unlike many ship museums where you peer through ropes at a sanitised display, here you genuinely crawl through hatches, spin the helm wheel and stand in the actual control room. Children adore it; adults find it quietly sobering.
Combining it with Escal'Atlantic
The Espadon and Escal'Atlantic share the same ticket zone and are separated by only a few hundred metres of quayside. A combined ticket covers both, and most visitors do them back to back in a full morning or afternoon.
The contrast between the two — the glamour of a 1930s ocean liner and the brutal functionality of a Cold War submarine — is itself a compelling piece of storytelling about what the sea means to Saint-Nazaire.
