La Cigale Égarée
Tucked into a quiet street near the Vieux Port, La Cigale Égarée has built a devoted following among Saint-Nazaire locals for its market-driven, no-fuss bistro cooking that puts Loire estuary fish and Brière vegetables at the centre of every plate. The room is small, the welcome is warm, and the lunch menu is one of the best-value meals in the city.
What to eat
The kitchen changes its short menu weekly according to what the fishing boats and local farms deliver. Expect dishes like sandre (pike-perch) from the Loire with beurre blanc, mussels from the bay of Bourgneuf steamed with local cider, and a terrine of Brière duck that disappears within the first hour of service.
Desserts lean on seasonal fruit and dairy: a fromage blanc mousse with strawberries from the Vendée in June, or a warm far breton with salted caramel in winter. The wine list is short but thoughtful, with a good selection of Muscadet sur lie at fair prices.
Booking and logistics
The dining room seats only around 30 covers, so booking ahead — especially for Friday and Saturday dinner — is essential. The lunch formule (starter + main or main + dessert) is typically around €16–19 and represents outstanding value for the quality.
The restaurant is a 12-minute walk from Escal'Atlantic and sits on the edge of the regenerated Ville-Port district, making it a natural stop after a morning at the museums.
