Île de Fédrun
Floating in the middle of the Grande Brière marshes, the île de Fédrun is a sliver of dry land ringed entirely by water and connected to the mainland by a single causeway. Its single looping lane is lined with low, white-walled, thatched cottages — chaumières — that look exactly as they did a century ago.
Walking the island loop
The circuit around Fédrun is barely 3 km and takes about an hour on foot, but you'll want longer — every bend reveals another photogenic cottage with a garden tumbling onto the canal bank.
Look for the Maison de la Mariée at n°130, a preserved wedding house where local brides once displayed their trousseaux; it's one of the few interiors you can peek inside (small entry fee applies).
Local life & atmosphere
A handful of artisans and gîte owners still live here year-round, and you'll often find hand-painted signs offering homemade jam or dried herb bundles at garden gates.
The island is car-accessible via the causeway but genuinely peaceful — most visitors arrive by chaland from Rozé, drifting in through the reeds for a cinematic approach.
