Pic de la Neouvielle & Lac de Cap-de-Long
Perched at 2,161 metres, the turquoise Lac de Cap-de-Long is one of the highest reservoirs in Europe and the crown jewel of the Réserve Naturelle de Néouvielle, just 20 km from Saint-Lary-Soulan. On a clear morning the granite peaks mirror perfectly in the still water, and the silence is absolute.
The Drive & the Hike
A winding road climbs from the village of Fabian to the Aubert car park, where a network of marked trails fans out through a landscape of glacial lakes, dwarf pines and marmots. The classic loop linking Lac d'Aubert, Lac d'Aumar and Cap-de-Long takes around four hours at an easy pace.
The GR10 long-distance trail crosses this reserve, so you may share the path with through-hikers carrying enormous packs — a reminder that this terrain is the real Pyrenean wilderness, not a manicured park.
Wildlife & Wildflowers
From late June to early August the meadows erupt with gentians, narcissi and Pyrenean irises, and golden eagles circle the ridgelines above Pic de la Neouvielle (3,091 m). Izards — the nimble Pyrenean chamois — pick their way across the scree above the treeline most mornings.
The reserve is strictly protected: no camping, no dogs, and access by car is restricted in high summer to before 11 am and after 5 pm. Plan accordingly and you will have the lakeshores almost entirely to yourself.
