Ski Touring to the Refuge de Tré la Tête
For those who want to leave the piste map behind, the valley above Les Contamines-Montjoie — reached in 40 minutes from Saint-Gervais — opens into one of the quietest glacial amphitheatres in the Mont Blanc massif, with the staffed Refuge de Tré la Tête sitting at 1,970 m as the perfect basecamp.
The Route
The approach follows a summer mule track converted into a well-marked winter skin track that gains 600 m over roughly 7 km through silver birch forest and open avalanche corridors. The gradient is consistent and manageable for confident intermediate ski tourers with proper avalanche safety equipment.
As the valley widens above the treeline, the Tré la Tête Glacier comes into view, flanked by the Aiguilles de la Pennaz and the Dômes de Miage. On a clear February morning the light on the seracs is electric blue and the silence is total.
The Refuge
The Refuge de Tré la Tête is owned by the Club Alpin Français and sleeps around 70 in dormitories and small rooms. The guardian serves hot soup, tartiflette and a surprisingly good selection of Savoie wines. Booking a night here transforms the trip from a day outing into a genuine alpine adventure.
The hut is also the staging point for the classic ski mountaineering route onto the Dômes de Miage (3,673 m), one of the most aesthetically rewarding ski summits in the Mont Blanc area and achievable by competent tourers with a guide.
Safety and Logistics
Always check the avalanche bulletin at meteofrance.com before departure and hire a certified mountain guide if you are unfamiliar with the terrain. The Compagnie des Guides de Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc offers guided day tours and hut trips throughout the winter season.
In summer the same valley is a superb hiking destination; the trail to the refuge is open from June and connects to the Tour du Mont Blanc long-distance route, making it a worthwhile detour for TMB walkers.
