Marché de Saint-Gervais-les-Bains
Every Tuesday and Friday morning the main square of Saint-Gervais fills with stalls selling raw-milk Beaufort, honey from high-altitude hives, charcuterie, and Savoyard ceramics. It is the most local thing you can do in town before the mountains swallow your day.
What to Buy
Head straight for the cheese vendors and ask for a wedge of Beaufort d'alpage — the summer-made version with its deep yellow paste and nutty, almost caramel finish. Pair it with a saucisson sec from the Savoie and you have the perfect trailhead picnic.
Local honey producers sell polyfloral varieties scented with gentian and wild thyme; small jars make the best lightweight souvenir. Look also for fresh blueberries and wild mushrooms when they are in season from late July onward.
The Atmosphere
The market clusters around the Place de la Résistance and spills down a couple of side streets, giving it a genuinely village feel rather than a tourist-market vibe. Stallholders are mostly local producers from the Arve valley and surrounding communes.
A mobile crêpe stand near the fountain turns out buckwheat galettes stuffed with local ham and Reblochon that are worth a short queue. Grab one and eat it on the church steps while watching the Mont Blanc massif appear and disappear behind morning cloud.
Timing Your Visit
The market runs from roughly 8 am to 12:30 pm; arrive before 10 am for the best selection and before the coach-tour crowd arrives from Chamonix. Friday tends to be slightly larger than Tuesday.
Most stalls are cash-preferred, so stop at the ATM on Rue du Mont Blanc before you arrive.
