Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain (MAMC+)
Saint-Étienne's Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art holds one of the four largest collections of 20th- and 21st-century art in France, yet it remains blissfully uncrowded — a genuine secret that art lovers from Lyon and beyond have started quietly keeping to themselves.
The Collection
Over 22,000 works span from 1900 to today, with particular strength in Arte Povera, New Realism and French post-war abstraction. Highlights include major pieces by Yves Klein, Christian Boltanski and Claude Viallat, displayed across airy, light-filled galleries that put the art first.
The design collection — furniture, posters, industrial objects — bridges the gap between the MAMC+ and the nearby Cité du Design, making a combined visit on the same day deeply satisfying.
A Museum That Surprises
The building itself, designed by Didier Guichard and opened in 1987, is a quietly confident piece of late-modernist architecture: white volumes, generous skylights and a sculpture garden where large-format works by Calder and Tinguely sit among plane trees.
Temporary exhibitions are consistently ambitious — past shows have focused on Annette Messager, Andy Warhol and the history of graphic design — and the programming regularly draws international curators.
