Cité du Design
Housed inside the dramatic steel-and-glass halls of the former Manufacture d'Armes, the Cité du Design is one of Europe's most ambitious design centres — part school, part lab, part public museum. Its rotating exhibitions put Saint-Étienne firmly on the creative-world map.
A Factory Reborn
The site was a state weapons factory for over two centuries before architects transformed it into a luminous cultural campus in 2009. The contrast between the 19th-century brick workshops and the soaring contemporary Platine building is stunning.
Permanent displays trace the city's industrial DNA — from ribbon looms and cycle frames to cutting-edge product design — giving real context to why UNESCO named Saint-Étienne a City of Design in 2010.
Biennale Internationale Design
Every two years the Cité explodes during the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, one of the world's top design festivals, drawing 200,000+ visitors with installations spilling across the whole city.
Even outside festival years the campus hosts thought-provoking temporary shows, a design bookshop worth an hour of browsing, and a café terrace overlooking the courtyard that buzzes with students and creatives.
