Marché de la Place du Peuple
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, the Place du Peuple in the heart of Saint-Étienne transforms into a riot of colour, noise and irresistible Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes produce. This is where locals have shopped for generations, and the authenticity is palpable.
Stalls Worth Lingering At
Arrive before 9 am to catch farmers unloading crates of Pilat mountain cheeses, cured sausages from the Haute-Loire, and baskets of walnuts from the Isère valley. The cheese vendors are particularly generous with samples — just make eye contact and smile.
Seasonal vegetables dominate the centre stalls: purple garlic in summer, fat pumpkins in autumn, wild mushrooms in October that smell of forest floor. The flower stalls near the fountain are a photographer's gift.
Eating Your Way Around the Square
A cluster of rôtisserie vans park on the north side; grab a paper cone of roast chicken and potatoes for under €5 and eat standing up like every self-respecting Stéphanois. Several stalls also sell freshly fried bugnes, the local doughnut-like pastry dusted in icing sugar.
The surrounding café terraces open early; a grand crème at Le Café du Peuple while watching the market theatre unfold is one of the most satisfying free pleasures in the city.
