Schoenenbourg Grand Cru Vineyard Viewpoint
A 20-minute walk uphill from the village centre brings you to the crest of the Schoenenbourg slope, a Grand Cru vineyard whose name appears on some of Alsace's most celebrated Rieslings. From here the entire village of Riquewihr sits below you like a scale model, its church spire, Dolder tower and terracotta rooftops surrounded by an unbroken sea of vines.
The Walk Up and What You'll See
Leave the village via the northern gate on Rue des Juifs and follow the yellow-blazed GR vineyard trail as it climbs through rows of Riesling. In summer the canopy of leaves is so dense it forms a green tunnel; in October the same rows turn gold and copper, and the harvest teams are often still at work, filling wooden crates by hand.
At the crest, a low stone marker identifies the Grand Cru boundary. Face south and you have Riquewihr below, the Rhine plain stretching to the horizon, and on clear days the faint silhouette of the Black Forest in Germany across the river.
Best Times and Photography Tips
Sunrise in summer (around 5:30 am in June) paints the village in pink light while ground mist still sits in the valley — this is the shot travel photographers come back for. Sunset in autumn is equally spectacular, with the low orange sun backlighting the vine leaves from the west.
Bring a wide-angle lens or use your phone's panorama mode; the full sweep from the Vosges foothills to the Rhine plain is nearly 180 degrees from the Schoenenbourg crest.
