Riquewihr Christmas Market (Marché de Noël)
Riquewihr's Christmas market is regularly ranked among the top five in all of France, and once you step through the Dolder Gate into a village glowing with tens of thousands of fairy lights strung between half-timbered facades, you will understand why. It runs from late November through late December and the entire village becomes the set.
What Makes This Market Different
Unlike the sprawling markets in Colmar or Strasbourg, Riquewihr's event is contained within a single medieval street roughly 400 metres long, which means every stall is visible within an hour and the atmosphere never feels diluted. Artisan producers dominate: hand-thrown pottery, linen table runners, carved wooden nativity figures, and pain d'épices (Alsatian spiced gingerbread) made to recipes that predate Napoleon.
The village's wine estates open their cellar doors during market weekends, offering free tastings of Crémant d'Alsace alongside vin chaud. Maison Hugel, whose cellars date to 1639, is particularly generous with pours.
Timing Your Visit
Weekday mornings between 10 am and noon are the sweet spot: stalls are fully stocked, the mulled-wine steam is rising, and the coach-tour crowds have not yet arrived. If you must come on a weekend, aim for the opening weekend in late November before the market reaches peak popularity.
The village is car-free during market hours on weekends; shuttle buses run from a park-and-ride at the D1B road junction 2 km north of town, and the ride takes under five minutes.
