Dolder Gate & Rampart Walk
Riquewihr's 16th-century Dolder tower is the most photographed gate in Alsace, its honey-stone arch framing a cobbled lane lined with flower-draped half-timbered houses. Climb the tower's interior staircase for a bird's-eye view over the village rooftops and the vine-striped hills beyond.
A Tower Built for War, Loved for Beauty
The Dolder was erected in 1291 and reinforced in 1500, and its thick walls once sheltered the village against Burgundian raids. Today the ground floor houses a small local history museum where you can handle genuine medieval weapons and study scale models of the fortifications.
Walk the short surviving stretch of rampart eastward from the Dolder and you will find a quieter, less-photographed angle on the village — mossy walls, a half-hidden well, and kitchen gardens spilling over ancient stone.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
The tower museum is open daily from April to October, roughly 10 am to 12:30 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm; entry costs around €2 and is cash only. Arrive before 9 am or after 5 pm to photograph the gate without tour-group crowds obscuring the arch.
The best light for photography falls on the Dolder's western face in the late afternoon, when the sandstone glows amber against a blue Alsatian sky.
