A Region's Story, Told Without Clichés
The permanent collection spans 500,000 years of Breton history, from Neolithic menhirs and Gallo-Roman artefacts through to the Breton language revival of the 20th century, all presented with contemporary museography that avoids the dusty-cabinet trap of older regional museums.
The section on Breton maritime culture — fishing fleets, the slave trade routes out of Nantes, and the transatlantic crossings of Breton emigrants to Canada — is particularly frank and absorbing, covering histories that aren't always told in tourist-facing contexts.
The Building Is Worth the Visit Alone
Designed by Christian de Portzamparc and completed in 2006, the building's exterior is a sweeping concrete arc that locals either love or argue about loudly, which is usually a sign that the architecture is doing something interesting.
