Jardin du Thabor
Perched on a gentle hill in the northeast of the city centre, the Jardin du Thabor is a 10-hectare sweep of French formal gardens, rose gardens, an aviary and shaded promenades that feels like a private park even on a busy afternoon. Five Gardens in One
The park is divided into distinct zones: a classic French parterre with clipped box hedges, an English-style landscape garden with winding paths, a botanical garden with labelled specimens, a rose garden that peaks in June with over 2,000 varieties, and a small orangerie used for temporary exhibitions.
The belvedere terrace at the park's highest point gives a sweeping view over the city's rooftops towards the Parlement de Bretagne — this is the closest thing Rennes has to a proper urban panorama.
Wildlife and Quiet Corners
The aviary near the main entrance houses peacocks, pheasants and parakeets and is a guaranteed hit with children; the peacocks roam freely on the main lawn and will pose for photographs with zero encouragement.
Early mornings are magical here: mist sits in the hollows of the English garden, joggers pad past on the gravel paths, and the city noise fades to almost nothing behind the park's old stone walls.
