Reims Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims)

For eight centuries, the kings of France knelt inside this soaring Gothic masterpiece to receive their crowns — and standing beneath its 2,303 sculpted figures today still feels like a full-body shiver of history. The west façade alone, glowing honey-gold in afternoon light, is worth the drive from Paris.

A façade that rewrites your idea of Gothic

Every centimetre of the three portals is alive with angels, saints and biblical scenes carved between the 13th and 15th centuries. Look for the famous Smiling Angel (L'Ange au Sourire) on the left portal — her serene grin has become the unofficial symbol of the city.

The rose window above the central portal blazes with medieval blues and reds, but it is the Marc Chagall windows in the axial chapel, installed in 1974, that stop most visitors cold: deep sapphire panels depicting the Tree of Jesse feel simultaneously ancient and electric.

Inside the nave and the Palace of Tau

The nave stretches 138 metres and rises 38 metres — tall enough to swallow a twelve-storey building. Arrive on a sunny morning when light pours through the clerestory and turns the stone floor into a patchwork of colour.

Directly beside the cathedral, the Palais du Tau (the former archbishop's residence) houses the original statuary removed from the façade for conservation, including the colossal Goliath figure. The treasury room displays the talisman of Charlemagne and the coronation chalice — objects that make the history feel tangible rather than textbook.
