Le Jardin Les Crayères
Set in a Belle Époque château surrounded by a manicured two-hectare park, Le Jardin is the more relaxed brasserie sibling of the two-Michelin-starred Philippe Mille restaurant on the same estate — meaning you get the theatrical setting and impeccable Champagne-region produce without the three-hour tasting-menu commitment.
What to order
The menu pivots around the seasons and the terroir of the Grand Est: expect dishes like pike-perch from the Marne with a beurre blanc spiked with marc de Champagne, or a slow-braised pork cheek with Époisses cream and roasted celeriac. The bread trolley, laden with four or five house-baked loaves, is a meal in itself.
The Champagne list runs to several hundred references, with particular depth in grower-producers from the Côte des Blancs. Ask the sommelier for a glass of aged blanc de blancs to match the fish course — they are genuinely enthusiastic about steering you toward something unexpected.
The setting and when to go
Lunch on the terrace in June or September, when the horse-chestnut trees shade the white-clothed tables and the château façade glows behind you, is one of those meals you describe to people for years. Dinner inside the vaulted dining room is equally beautiful but more formal in atmosphere.
Reservations are strongly recommended, especially at weekends. The estate is a 15-minute walk south of the cathedral through the quiet residential streets of the Erlon neighbourhood — pleasant enough to justify skipping the taxi.
