Ravenna's covered market, tucked just off Piazza del Popolo, is where the city feeds itself every single morning — and where you'll find the freshest piadina, local cheeses and Adriatic seafood without a tourist surcharge in sight.
What to Eat and Buy Inside
The ground floor is a labyrinth of stalls selling Romagna staples: squacquerone cheese (spreadably soft, faintly tangy), lonza salami, and mountains of locally grown white asparagus in spring. Fishmongers at the back display the morning's Adriatic catch — clams, razor shells and fat red mullet — still gleaming.
Don't leave without a piadina from one of the small kiosks near the entrance. The Romagnola flatbread here is thicker and more rustic than the coastal resort version, stuffed to order with prosciutto di Parma and squacquerone. Budget €3–4 for a generous wrap.
Getting There and the Best Time to Visit
The market sits on Via Mazzini, a five-minute walk from the train station and the same distance from San Vitale. It's perfectly positioned for a pre-mosaic breakfast stop between 8 and 10 am when produce stalls are fully stocked and the coffee bar inside is buzzing.
Saturday mornings see an outdoor extension spill onto the surrounding streets with seasonal fruit and vegetable vendors from the Po Delta farms. It's the most photogenic and lively session of the week.
The market closes by 1:30 pm on most days and is shut on Sundays, so plan accordingly — arriving late means picked-over stalls and closed counters.
