Mausoleo di Teodorico
On the northern edge of the city, a ten-sided Istrian limestone mausoleum sits in a quiet park — built around 520 AD for Theodoric the Great, Ostrogoth king of Italy, and crowned with a single 300-tonne monolithic dome that engineers still can't fully explain.
Why This Monument Stops You in Your Tracks
Unlike Ravenna's glittering mosaic basilicas, the Mausoleo di Teodorico is all about raw engineering. The dome — a single piece of Istrian limestone 11 metres in diameter and weighing roughly 300 tonnes — was quarried in what is now Croatia, shipped across the Adriatic and hoisted into place without mortar. Twelve projecting 'handles' around its rim were likely used in the lifting process, though the exact method remains debated.
The interior is a two-storey rotunda. The upper chamber holds a large porphyry bathtub repurposed as Theodoric's sarcophagus (his remains were later removed). The austere space has none of the Byzantine decoration of San Vitale but creates a completely different and equally powerful atmosphere.
Visiting Tips and the Surrounding Park
The mausoleum sits in a small green park about 1.5 km north of the city centre — a 20-minute walk or a short cycle. It's included in the combined Ravenna Mosaics ticket and is almost always less crowded than the central basilicas, even in high summer.
The park around the monument is a pleasant picnic spot and a good place to decompress after the intensity of the mosaic churches. A small moat-like depression surrounds the base of the building — the ground level has risen about two metres since the sixth century, so you're looking at the monument from a higher angle than Theodoric's contemporaries would have.
Early morning visits reward you with soft light on the pale limestone and the near-certainty of having the monument entirely to yourself for at least 30 minutes.
